The right background music for every video
Explainer videos and tutorials
Every word counts here. Steady songs without melody work best: a calm beat, soft pads, few surprises. Your explanation stays clear, and the video still does not feel empty.
Vlogs and travel videos
Here the music may tell more. Acoustic guitar and light percussion suit everyday life and being on the road. For scenes without speech, simply switch to the original version with melody.
Slideshows as a video
For photos of a wedding, a holiday or a birthday that you share as a video on YouTube, Instagram or TikTok, piano and soft strings work well.
Product and brand videos
A little more energy without pushing: upbeat pop and electronic songs with a clear rhythm. For videos of your company and for videos you make for clients, you need the Lifetime license.
How to use background music well
Mix it quietly enough
The music should be felt rather than heard. As a starting point, set it 15 to 20 dB below your voice and check with headphones and on a phone speaker. If a syllable is hard to understand, the music is too loud.
Pro tip: sidechain compression (ducking)
Advanced editors can have a sidechain compressor lower the music automatically whenever someone speaks. To do this, put a compressor on the music track and drive it with the voice track.
A good starting point is about 3–6 dB of extra gain reduction, an attack time of 10–30 ms and a release time of 300–600 ms.
This way the music steps back subtly while someone speaks and comes back up in the pauses. Important: the transitions should sound natural and not audibly “pump”.
Pick the right version
Under speech, a melody often gets in the way more than you think. Then take the “No Melody” version: rhythm and pads stay, the melody is gone. In passages without speech, switch to the original. The versions are usually the same length and can be cut at the same spot.
Fit the length
If the song is longer than your video, fade it out over 2 to 3 seconds at the end or cut at the end of a bar. Some songs also have a “Short Mix” for short clips.
If the song is too short, you can extend it by copying and repeating suitable sections on the beat. This gives you the most control over how the music develops.
It’s easier with automatic features such as “Remix” in Adobe Premiere Pro or the “AI Music Editor” in DaVinci Resolve Studio. They analyze the song and rebuild it with smart cuts and repeats. Then simply drag the music to the length you need or set a target duration. Afterwards, check that the transitions sound natural.
Frequently asked questions about background music
Is the background music really free?
Yes. For your own videos, you can download and use all songs except the Premium songs as MP3 for free. You pay nothing, not even later. The only condition is a credit in the video description or the end credits.
What does “No Melody” mean?
It is a version of the song without its melody. Rhythm, bass and pads stay. It suits videos with a lot of speech, because nothing competes with your voice.
Are the songs also available without drums?
Yes, many songs come in a “No Drums” version. You choose it with the song’s version button. It is included in the free use.
May I use the music in a company video?
Yes, with the Lifetime license for a one-off €119. It covers companies, associations and institutions with up to 15 employees, including videos you make for clients of that size. Larger companies get suitable licenses from audiohub.
May I shorten, cut or loop a song?
Yes. For your video you may shorten, cut and repeat the music, fade it in and out and talk over it. You may not pass the music on without the video, release it as your own song or sell it.
Where does the music come from? Is it AI-generated?
No. All our songs are composed, produced and mastered by people. We do not use artificial intelligence for this. That is also why we hold all the rights and can grant them to you directly.
Another advantage: if you also avoid AI in your videos, our music keeps your content completely AI-free. So you don’t have to worry about any additional AI labeling because of our music.
